This particular line of thinking often leads to one question college students often ask..."Why?", "Why do my essays need to go beyond the five-paragraph format that I was taught. College Professors don't usually require us to go beyond, so what is the point?" 

The answer is simple. Similarly to parents giving more responsibilities and setting higher expectations to their growing children, professors expect their students who are now in college to demonstrate higher levels of work.
